De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: Pain on the Thumb Side of the Wrist, Widening the Narrowed Passage

This surgery opens the narrow passage surrounding the tendons that move the thumb, allowing them to glide smoothly. It is performed briefly on an outpatient basis.

How the Surgery Proceeds

    Anesthesia and Assessment

    Local anesthesia

    After local anesthesia, we identify the passage causing pain and the surrounding nerves.

  2. 02

    Passage Release

    About 15 to 30 minutes

    The narrowed tendon passage is opened lengthwise to widen the tendon's range of movement.

  3. 03

    Closure and Completion

    The incision is closed and dressed, and you go home the same day.

Recovery and Precautions

Light hand use is recommended after 1 to 2 weeks, and full thumb use after 4 to 6 weeks.
Sutures are usually removed 10 to 14 days after surgery.
Pain typically decreases quickly, and satisfaction tends to be high.
