An epidermal cyst is a benign growth in which a sac forms under the skin and fills with keratin. After confirming its size and depth with ultrasound, it is removed under local anesthesia.

Situation: A palpable lump beneath the skin was suspected to be an epidermal cyst, and its depth and size were confirmed with ultrasound.
Treatment focus: After local anesthesia, the sac is excised along the cyst wall, or capsule, in its entirety. If infection is present, debridement and irrigation are also considered.

QDo I need to have it removed?

No. A benign lump that is not changing in size and is not causing discomfort can simply be monitored. However, if it grows or becomes painful, removal is considered after an evaluation.

QWill there be a scar?

The incision is kept minimal and sized to the lump, so the scar is small and fades over time. Incisions follow the direction of skin creases to make them less noticeable.

QCan it come back?

A cyst can recur if part of the sac remains, so removing the sac completely is important. Lipoma recurrence is rare.
