Hand and Wrist Condition Guide

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Compression of the median nerve inside the wrist tunnel can cause numbness from the thumb to the ring finger.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed inside the passage at the wrist. It can cause hand numbness, nighttime tingling, and reduced sensation. If compression persists, weakness around the thumb may develop.

Treatment Direction

Confirming Nerve Compression

Provocative neurological examination, ultrasound, and electromyography can be used to make the diagnosis.

Initial Treatment

A brace, medication, and ultrasound-guided injection therapy can reduce inflammation around the nerve. Most patients improve with nonsurgical treatment alone, and surgery is considered only when necessary.

Surgical Consultation

Carpal tunnel release may be considered if weakness develops or symptoms persist despite appropriate nonsurgical treatment.

Notice

A treatment plan is not determined by the condition name alone. Examination findings, nerve function, imaging, and daily limitations are considered together.

Do not put off persistent pain. Have it checked.
