Morton's Neuroma

Burning forefoot pain and numbness between the toes that worsen in narrow shoes or during long runs.

Understanding Morton's Neuroma

Repeated compression can thicken and sensitize tissue around an interdigital nerve. Narrow toe boxes, forefoot pressure, and long-distance running may aggravate symptoms.

Treatment Direction

Adjust Shoes and Forefoot Load

Use a wider toe box and metatarsal support, and reduce the distance or speed that triggers symptoms.

Assess Nerve Pain

Forefoot compression, sensation, and ultrasound when needed help rule out a mass or joint pain.

Stepwise Treatment

Footwear and load changes come first, with injections or other options considered if symptoms persist.

Return-to-Running Criteria

Burning and numbness are controlled during normal walking
Forefoot compression is more comfortable in wider shoes
Restart below the distance that previously triggered symptoms

When to Seek Evaluation Promptly

Seek evaluation for persistent toe numbness, forefoot swelling with difficulty bearing weight, or focal bone pain.

Do not put off persistent pain. Have it checked.
